About DNB

Doulas of New-Brunswick

Non-Profit Organization

Our Mission

Doulas of New Brunswick (DNB) is a nonprofit professional organization consisting of perinatal doulas serving expectant families in all parts of New-Brunswick, Canada.

'A perinatal doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to families before and during childbirth as well as during the postpartum period, to help them achieve the healthiest, most satisfying and memorable birth experience possible.' This definition includes but is not limited to fertility doulas, labour and birth doulas, postpartum doulas.

Code of Ethics

Confidentiality and Privacy

The DNB Doula will respect the privacy of clients and hold in total confidence all information obtained in the course as professional service. She also ensures that her clients’ files are in a secure place at all times.

Primacy of client's interests

The DNB Doula's primary responsibility is to support her clients.

Obligation to Serve

The DNB Doula is expected to assist every client seeking doula support. She will either provide the services herself, or if she feels she is not the best fit for the client, will make appropriate referrals.

Professional Integrity

The DNB Doula understands that she is acting as a representative of the profession as a whole, and that her actions have an impact on the local birth community.

Ethical Responsibility

The DNB Doula will perform her business activity in accordance with the highest standards of professional integrity and will adhere to moral and ethical principles such as honesty, honor, dependability and trustworthiness.

Standards of Doula Practice

DNB Organization

  • Strongly encourages its doulas to clearly state her fees to her clients and through a written contract or invoice describe the services to be provided, terms of payment and refund policies.
  • Expects its doula members to strive to become and remain proficient in the professional practice of a doula through continuing education, affiliation with related organizations and association with other doulas.
  • Expects temporary non-practicing doula members to inform the organization of the estimated duration of cessation of doula activity. She may remain a member during her period of inactivity.
  • Expects its doula members to assist the profession in making doula support services known to the general public in a constructive and positive manner. DNB Doulas will in no way vilify a governing body, a medical institution or professional, but rather participate actively in finding solutions to problems in our actual provincial system of perinatal care.

The DNB Doula

  • Provides clients with time-tested, evidence-based information from up-to-date research and reliable sources to enable expectant families to make informed decisions regarding their pregnancy, birth and baby care.
  • Assists her clients in formulating realistic birth preferences that match their values and needs to their chosen place of birth.
  • Supports families during labour and birth by:
    • Helping with logistics of birth preparation
    • Setting up bith environment at home or hospital
    • Offering physical support and suggesting comfort measures (previously discussed with her clients)
    • Reassuring parents during uncomplicated birth
    • Empowering them to follow their birth plan or to revise if the need arises
    • Reminding them of pros and cons of medical procedures
    • Enhancing positive comunication between them and their caregiver by encouraging them to ask questions and express preferences
    • Encouraging skin to skin and breastfeeding soon after birth if it is her client's desire
  • Provides continuity of care by:
    • nurturing a professional, caring relationship with her clients during the prenatal period in order to bring familiarity during the birth, especially in hospitals of New-Brunswick where continuity of care is not the norm (rotation of doctors on-call, nurses working shifts...).
    • discussing her availability ahead of time with her clients and being reliable for the term of the agreement. Should an unforeseen event prevent her from attending the birth, the DNB Doula does her best to make back-up arrangements with another doula to ensure the expectant family is not left unsupported.
    • Offers appropriate referrals when a situation arises that requires support that falls outside the doula’s scope of practice.
    • Recognizes that responsibility for clinical management belongs to the health care provider and the client. The doula does not interfere with clinical management beyond making suggestions to or asking questions of the health care provider and the client, based on their knowledge of the client's birth plans.
    • Does not displace existing support persons but rather facilitates their full participation in supporting the client.
    • Does not speak for her clients nor make decisions on their behalf, as to respect their rights to self determination.
    • Does not diagnose or perform medical procedures such as assessing fetal heart tones, taking blood pressure, performing vaginal exams, reading and interpreting medical tests and diagnosis, temperature taking...
    • Does not attend births that are intentionally unassisted (births that do not have a trained and certified medical professional (certified midwife or medical doctor) in attendance.

Why Choose a Doula?

Choosing a birth doula means choosing continuous, personalized support during one of life's most powerful moments.

A doula provides emotional reassurance, physical comfort, and knowledgeable guidance before, during, and shortly after childbirth.

Unlike hospital staff who may change shifts, your doula stays with you throughout the process—offering consistent care that's focused solely on you and your birth plan.

Whether it's your first baby or your fifth, having a doula can reduce stress, improve birth outcomes, and empower you to make informed decisions every step of the way.

This is your journeywe're here to walk it with you.

Hi there!

I am Pascaline, a Doula certified by the maternity center Mère & Monde of Montréal and the owner of Birth Story Doula Services. I have served families in Northern New Brunswick since 2016 and now look forward to working in the Fredericton region. As a mother of four, each of my birth stories has taught me that compassionate, continuous support is the common thread to a positive birth experience. I believe that pregnancy and childbirth are natural parts of family life that should be embraced and not feared. I strive to offer families unbiased, current, evidence-based perinatal information. My greatest passion lies in providing birth support and encouraging optimal baby positioning to facilitate an easier birth.

As a former prenatal instructor for the Victorian Order of Nurses, where I taught women under the age of 25, I can relate to women and couples with diverse approaches to pregnancy and birth. I also understand the importance of collaborating with other healthcare providers to create a positive birth experience.

I offer prenatal consultations both in-person and online, as well as birth support at hospitals and at home under the expertise of registered midwives. As a Perinatal Naturopath and member of Ritma, I have the possibility of offering receipts for medical insurance coverage.

You can reach me at Birth Story Doula Services. I look forward to helping you write your very own Birth Story!

Hello there! I'm Jennifer, the proud owner of Blueberry Hill Images. I am a full-spectrum doula and a photographer specializing in documentary family and birth photography. Oromocto is home to my family: my husband and two daughters.

My journey into doula work was inspired by my experiences as a birth photographer. Witnessing the profound impact of birth photography, I soon felt compelled to offer more holistic support to families during this transformative period. This led me to pursue doula training, enabling me to provide full perinatal support services to families in the Fredericton region.

For me, establishing a deep connection with my clients is fundamental. It goes beyond just capturing memorable moments; it involves providing steadfast emotional support and acting as a reliable confidant throughout this momentous life journey.

My services are versatile, offering clients the option to choose between standalone birth photography, doula support, or a combined package that integrates both photography and doula support.

During my downtime, I find joy in reading, engaging in artistic pursuits with my daughters, playing board games, and spending time in nature.

I speak a little funny as I have a fading English accent, so read this intro as such!

I am a certified doula to the Fredericton area of New Brunswick and feel like I have finally found my calling. Since a young age, birth-related work has been an integral part of my life, and for the past decade, I have immersed myself in studying pregnancy and childbirth research. In 2022, I had an extraordinary home birth attended by a midwife and supported by an amazing Doula. Following that profound experience, I made up my mind that if I could offer even half as much assistance to birthing parents as I received, then it was something I wanted to do! Thus Elethya Doula Services was born.

I provide support through pregnancy, birth and postpartum to your family on your terms. I genuinely enjoy developing deep connections and love becoming more friends than doula. I know birth to be a transformative time for families and especially for the birthing parent. I trust their inherent ability to bring their baby into this world while also acknowledging the importance of medical interventions when necessary.

Hi! I'm Abby Kierstead, founder of Seven Sisters Doula Services in Saint John, NB. I grew up in Fredericton with my six sisters, where I learned early on about individuality and the strength of sisterhood.

My journey into birth work began when my oldest sister became a homebirth midwife, and I was inspired by her path. Later, I had the privilege of supporting her at her own birth and witnessed the powerful, peaceful, and family-centered birth of my youngest niece at home. The experience of a woman-led birth ignited a passion in me, and I've felt called to this work ever since. I trained with Intentional Birth Pro, learning from experts around the world, including doctors, midwives, doulas, and researchers.

As a doula, I aim to be a steady, protective “sister” to every client—not to lead, but to fiercely guard your plan, your choices, and your voice. I will walk beside you, helping you prepare for and surrender to the beautiful unpredictability of your birth.

I offer prenatal education, birth support, advocacy, and postpartum care throughout Saint John, Fredericton, and Sussex. I'm so glad to be available for families and excited to serve my community! Feel free to follow me on instagram: Abby Kierstead | Seven Sisters Doula Services for photos and videos or email me at doula.sevensisters@gmail.com
